Litice Castle was established near the end of the 13th century during the colonization of the sparse settlement at the time of the ancient border forest of northeastern Bohemia, which was royal property. The castle was built on a high rock promontory over the meandering Divoká Orlice River. By the end of the 16th century the castle was already entirely abandoned; care was taken, however, to ensure that it didn’t become completely dilapidated, and at least the rear palace was secured. Attempts were also made to preserve the castle in the 19th century; the ruins were partially secured and conserved in the 1930’s when the outlook deck of the tower was also repaired.
Did you know that the oldest written reference to the castle dates back to 1316?
